What to expect at Chelmsford Family Court
Chelmsford Family Court hears divorce, financial remedy and children matters for most of central and northern Essex, including Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon, Witham, South Woodham Ferrers and surrounding villages.
Priory Place, New London Road, Chelmsford, CM2 0PP · 01245 264670
Parking
There is no dedicated court car park. The nearest public options are the Meadows multi-storey (High Chelmer, CM1 1XB) and Chelmsford's Park & Ride at Sandon (CM2 7SR), roughly a 10 minute walk. Allow extra time on busy list days.
Getting there
Chelmsford railway station is 12 minutes on foot; frequent services from London Liverpool Street, Colchester and Southend Victoria. Local buses stop on Duke Street and Parkway.
Security
Airport-style screening at the entrance. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your hearing. Bags, belts and coats go through the scanner, so leave anything sharp or unnecessary at home. Phones are allowed but must be silent in court.
Facilities
Separate waiting areas can usually be arranged where domestic abuse is a factor, ask the usher on arrival. There is a small cafe area, but choice is limited so bringing water and a light snack is sensible on all-day hearings.
Courtroom etiquette
Dress smartly. Stand when the judge or magistrates enter and leave. Address a District Judge as 'Judge' and a Circuit Judge as 'Your Honour'. Do not interrupt, and speak only when invited to. Note-taking is fine; recording is not.
